Maternal or medical instinct?
By: Dra. Anna Bykova, M.D. / Ph.D.
Life comes to us like a miracle; it is hard to argue with that. However, I insist that my patients do not leave all the burden of responsibility for the health of their future children to Providence.
The relationship to planned pregnancy reflects the cultural level of each individual and society as a whole. The first steps in this area start with sex education and the reproductive health of adolescent girls, the main thing that will affect the health of future generations.
After deciding to expand our family, we must first consult a gynecologist, who will assess the state of the woman's reproductive health and help identify risk factors. In addition, a gynecologist takes the role of "guide" during preparation for pregnancy, he explains all the necessary steps forward for the couple and arranges analyzes and consultations with specialists.
So as not to overshadow the joy of motherhood, it is necessary to prepare at least four months prior to conception. Preparation should involve both partners: parents need to know their blood groups and Rh factors, and be tested for hepatitis B and C, HIV, syphilis and latent infections. A child's health depends heavily on the lifestyle of the parents, their nutrition and bad habits. Parents are requested to quit smoking, alcohol and certain medications, particularly hormonal drugs, in order to get through the so-called "peak failure" period and restore metabolic processes before conception.
Patients are always assigned pelvic ultrasound around the 5-7th day of the menstrual cycle, a thyroid ultrasound and we often recommend taking hormonal examination. For women it is desirable to have blood tests for the diagnosis of TORCH-infections, which are high risk for fetus toxoplasmosis, rubella, chlamydia, herpes and cytomegalovirus infection. Information about the presence of antibodies in the blood is necessary for timely vaccination, recommendations for management of pregnancy and assessment of the risk of fetal infection in the early stages.
For all its importance, preparation for pregnancy should not be an obsession or cause stress. When you are ready to become parents, do not forget to enjoy the process, because the appearance of a new life is still a miracle.
